MUNITIONS HANDLING CARTS

Harpers Ferry National Historic Park will use these recently completed carts for demonstrations at the arsenal.

WASHINGTON FOLDING FIELD BEDSTEAD

In the photo below, two variations of Washington’s field beds are shown set up in a tent and ready for use. Documentation exists for his use of both, at different times and locations.

Foreground is Stool-Bed, comprised of three separate folding stools with head, side and foot boards. Construction is oak, with hemp supports and forged iron hardware.

Behind is the Folding Field Bedstead which is a remarkable feat of engineering, as the entire assembly folds neatly and stows in the rope handled pine box against the tent wall. Sturdy enough for daily use, yet delicate and refined in appearance. This is an elegant bed, suitable for high ranking officers. Gorgeous details throughout include walnut structural members, forged iron hardware, and linen privacy curtains.

18TH CENTURY WHEELBARROW

This wheelbarrow is exceptionally sturdy, constructed of dense and weather resistant white oak: the same wood used in wooden ship structural timbers. Built for decades of use. Balanced and comfortable to use, this design is much more efficient than conventional modern designs.

Forged iron (and steel) hardware. Removable sides. Mortice & tenon construction throughout. Shown below in an unpainted version (without sides) and finished, ready for use.

SPRING POLE LATHE

This ingenious spring pole lathe is operated by a foot treadle and provides ample power for turnings up to about 16″ in length. Durable timber frame construction easily disassembles by means of wedge keys and allows for portable transportation. Iron hardware.

Richard S. Toone demonstrates its operation at Rockingham: Washinton’s Final Headquarters, during a living history interpretation.

OFFICER’S CANTEEN

This fully appointed Officer’s Canteen will be delivered to the California-based re-created British 33rd Regiment of Foot, which will use it to interpret historical foodways at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, the Huntington Library and Gardens, and Colonial Williamsburg, as well as other venues. Canteen contents provides service for six, with condiments, and will enable a Principal Cook to prepare a gourmet meal in the field.

Images below depict several views of open double locked Officer’s Canteen showing various custom made utensils: hand blown bottles, custom tin boxes for candles, spoons, tea and fire starting. Note also lidded pots, spider basting pan, blown wine glassware, table setting including candle stand/tinderbox with snuffer. An altogether striking display of hand worked dipped tinware employing construction details from 1776 documented originals made in Philadelphia, reproduced by Carl Giordano.

Interior of Officer’s Canteen showing wool covered partitions providing protection for (6) hand blown wine glasses and (2) hand blown wine decanters as well as other items. Note the individually hand blocked wallpaper complements the dark green felt wool interior.

OFFICER’S GRADE MESS KIT

Officer’s Grade Mess Kit is now available, complete and correct to French & Indian or Revolutionary War period. All items will be fitted in compartments of an iron clasped black hide covered chest decorated with brass tacks and securely double locked. Interior covered in wool and hand blocked wall paper in neatest manner.

With one exception the components in this Officer’s Mess Kit are specially hand made for this kit by American Artisans employing style and construction techniques taken from original 18th Century examples. The exception is stainless steel knives and forks cast from patterns of originals for this project with handles applied by me. A display of this Mess Kit will produce wonderment.
